During the starting phase of attempting the, “A Week of Three Good Things” , exercise I had my doubts. As I'm sure some of the class had to, going off the name alone. The purpose of this exercise is to focus on the positives or anything good that has happened throughout the week rather than the things that brought your mood down. Its a countermeasure to ruminating over the negatives of the week which often bring down your moral and overall happiness in exchange for looking at the good, even if little. The process was created by Martin Seligman, a man who's profession lies in physiology. The last seven blog posts were me attempting to uplift my well being through Positive psychology.
Over the course of the week, the first day of the exercise was to me, rather lack luster. I didn't really find too many things that made me smile or have a major impact on my day in a positive way that would be substantial to write about. Even though when I sat down and that thought about it, there were moments there but my mind has a stigma that keeps me repeating only the negatives of the day. If I hadn't started this process that might be something I never really came to the realization of. In the attempt of trying to find three good things that brought positive to me day, it became more apparent just how much my free time was spent thinking about the things that make me most upset, and the realization startled me. When I did think of these three things my scowl turned into a smile. Instead of laying in bed staring at the ceiling crunching the numbers needed to fix my car's issues, instead I was looking at the ceiling with a grin on my face laughing to myself about stupid interactions at work. Despite how hard the shift was. By day seven, I noticed that during this week I spent more time thinking positively than I had in a long time, but I felt like there was something further. Like I could have done the exercise for an extended period to feel more drastic effects. Even though day one seemed promising, the smile I found that day was a struggle to find again until the last day. Even though I didn't show anything facially my thoughts were still affected. So will I say that it was a success? At this moment I would like to say yes, but I think for someone like myself, I would be better off maybe take more measures in the exercise than whats stated.

In today's blog post I decided to do a video log instead of writing out my reflection on the semester thus far. This being my first attempt at a vlog made it a very interestingly anxious experience. zero out of ten, might do again. But better. The following blog posts of this week will involve me trying out a process called, Three Good Things (Greater Good in Action). It asks those who take it on to write down three things that lifted their spirit and put them into a positive mood. Trying it couldn't hurt and may even be fun. The result is for me to stop focusing on the negative and picture the good of what happens in my day-to-day.
Comic Book Ventures : Enjoyed an afternoon of reading some comic books. Superman Earth One turned out to be the source material for my favorite Superman film, Man of Steel. To see where the material came from increased my love of the movie and even more the character of Superman. Onto The Next Game : Finished my Kingdom Hearts 2.8 game to refresh myself of some of the story. Now I'm more excited than ever for the next release. Last Day : Today marked the last day of the 'week of three good things' assignment. Having completed all seven I feel pretty accomplished. Looking back on it, it was actually a pretty okay week when everything was written and done. Winning : Played a game I haven't touched in a while, Smash Bros for the Wii U to be exact. Despite being away from the game for so long I decided to plunge head-first into the online fighting mode. To my surprise I had a pretty competitive three rounds with me winning two out of three even with me being a little rusty. Sweet Gear : Went shopping for some new shirts and came across two that were the last ones in stock. Managed to grab both even after doing some more shopping and coming back later after thinking about doing the purchase or not. Fixin' Wheels : Drove up to Wilmington today to help my brother replace a battery in an old ride he's trying to revive. Because we spent the time fooling around we ended up prolonging a short job, but it was a good time despite it taking an hour more than it should have. Even my store manager gave me some recognition. Good Drive : Decided to take the long way home and listen to the album 'YSIV' by Logic. The first track set the tone for the whole ride, it was a nice 30 minute vibe. Still Got Vocals : During the drive I sang along to the chorus of the track, 'Thank You' and was surprised I still had some range despite not practicing singing for a couple years. Day Five
Rest : Actually got a full night's sleep despite pulling an all-nighter yesterday due to insomnia. Sometimes I forget how good eight hours of sleep can feel. Just plotting : Took a minute out of my day to sit down and figure some things out in my life. It felt like five minutes well spent. Cat naps : After starting the outline of my speech for my public speaking class I took a nap. I had woken up fifteen minutes in and noticed that my cat had joined me and was sleeping at the head of my pillow. I decided to lay back down and nap along with her for another forty-five minutes. Home Free : Managed to get my car inspected and took care of business. Sitting With My People : While getting my car worked on, it was a decent excuse for me and my Dad to catch up on some things. Decent Episode : Ended the day with a pretty cool episode of Netflix's Iron Fist. |
