In my 13th week blog post I was beginning to lean on the other side of the fence when concerning positive psychology and what it could do for your well-being. When I was going through the steps before maybe I was doing it all wrong. A lot of thought process day after day was “what do I feel” or “Am I forcing myself to be happy, or is it happening naturally?”. During the 2 weeks after the initial start of my research I was on the brink of thinking that maybe it was more of me creating my on placebo and that every change I thought I had experienced was really of my own making, which it was, but was only brought about by the Three Good Things. Could I replicate that without looking for anything positive? Just letting things happen that were good and just keep moving?
Well I attempted it, and it indeed made a difference. Even though I still experience good things here and there, without the thought of “Three Good Things” weighing in the back of my conscience, they all were nothing but fleeting moments. Where during the seven days, now that I look back on it, I did much like Mr. Sabatino said that he had done. I wasn’t just enjoying the moments more but my new thought process allowed me to savor them in a different way. They were no longer just moments you could smile and laugh about for a brief second and just move on to the next scene of your day. These moments became like a glass of cool water for me as I coursed through the dry-lands of my daily routines. Keeping favorable moments on my mind kept me from looking too serious and made my presence seem more appealing. It's now become apparent to me that what was occurring before wasn’t in no way a placebo. I wasn’t just tricking myself in wanting to believe that the effects were there, but they really were. The eyes of other people don’t typically lie. I can rely more on theirs than my own. After all I can feel almost anything. But when people can visually point out the difference that they see in me then I have to commit to the answer that being positive did in fact change my well-being for the better. Before in my research paper I mentioned toward the end that I felt that the effects took a while to take hold. Which for me they did, and I still feel like maybe I should do this longer. That just may be the route that I take with this. I think, even if I may end up non-consistent at times, that I will try and actually make this part of not just my day to day, but maybe my life. In another blog post I briefly spoke about how I seem to have an affliction with negative thoughts. Now that I’ve confronted that part about myself, I think it's time to take up the sword and change that.

After having completed the week of Three Good Things I let the high of foregoing it die down a little to allow myself to readjust to my day to day before I started the practice. In doing so I was looking more into my life before I started to try and introduce a more positive outlook and if there was really a drastic difference after all. It took a while, but eventually I started back into the foggy life that I was living before, just going through the motions. It wasn’t immediate but eventually my former thought process started to re-develop and not even just myself, but everyone I interacted with started to notice things about me had shifted slightly. In an earlier blog post I had mentioned that my work place was starting the holiday season full throttle, and I had clung onto the positive psychology to keep myself from being easily irritated this season unlike the one before.
It worked. Most times when coworkers around me were passing by like chicken’s with their heads cut off I was roaming at a pace that seemed irregular for someone like myself. Even when interacting with people while we were all feeling the pressure, other’s seemed to pick up on this newly found optimism within me and would make vague comments on it through jokes of surprise. Since having decided to try and see if the difference was significant, I can attest that it was indeed visible and physical. Unlike the week I was doing the practice, I feel less motivated to look for anything good to happen and mostly hold a reserved sense pessimism toward things again. Just like before where others could sense the happiness in me and were taken aback, someone the other day looked at me and assumed I was upset because my face was back to being a statue. Even the jokes that I made in return were being taken more seriously because the energy I gave off with them was taken differently than before. So far, one question I seem to be struggling with is this. How is it possible that unless I'm looking for something or anything to smile about, I'm just a walking talking embodiment of fog? I don’t generally act upset. I also go out of my way to bring out excitement in others even if I don’t convey it well in myself. Earlier in my notes I kept referring to how it was “me” that saw things differently during the week. I never once took the time to think about how it was on the other side with how people were viewing me from their perspective in this new state I found myself in. If the past two weeks have shown anything, maybe it is in fact possible that the change wasn't just in myself, but also how others saw me. Positive psychology. Maybe it isn’t just something that you feel in yourself, but also something others around you can both feel and visibly see coming from you. During the starting phase of attempting the, “A Week of Three Good Things” , exercise I had my doubts. As I'm sure some of the class had to, going off the name alone. The purpose of this exercise is to focus on the positives or anything good that has happened throughout the week rather than the things that brought your mood down. Its a countermeasure to ruminating over the negatives of the week which often bring down your moral and overall happiness in exchange for looking at the good, even if little. The process was created by Martin Seligman, a man who's profession lies in physiology. The last seven blog posts were me attempting to uplift my well being through Positive psychology.
Over the course of the week, the first day of the exercise was to me, rather lack luster. I didn't really find too many things that made me smile or have a major impact on my day in a positive way that would be substantial to write about. Even though when I sat down and that thought about it, there were moments there but my mind has a stigma that keeps me repeating only the negatives of the day. If I hadn't started this process that might be something I never really came to the realization of. In the attempt of trying to find three good things that brought positive to me day, it became more apparent just how much my free time was spent thinking about the things that make me most upset, and the realization startled me. When I did think of these three things my scowl turned into a smile. Instead of laying in bed staring at the ceiling crunching the numbers needed to fix my car's issues, instead I was looking at the ceiling with a grin on my face laughing to myself about stupid interactions at work. Despite how hard the shift was. By day seven, I noticed that during this week I spent more time thinking positively than I had in a long time, but I felt like there was something further. Like I could have done the exercise for an extended period to feel more drastic effects. Even though day one seemed promising, the smile I found that day was a struggle to find again until the last day. Even though I didn't show anything facially my thoughts were still affected. So will I say that it was a success? At this moment I would like to say yes, but I think for someone like myself, I would be better off maybe take more measures in the exercise than whats stated. The following blog posts of this week will involve me trying out a process called, Three Good Things (Greater Good in Action). It asks those who take it on to write down three things that lifted their spirit and put them into a positive mood. Trying it couldn't hurt and may even be fun. The result is for me to stop focusing on the negative and picture the good of what happens in my day-to-day.
Comic Book Ventures : Enjoyed an afternoon of reading some comic books. Superman Earth One turned out to be the source material for my favorite Superman film, Man of Steel. To see where the material came from increased my love of the movie and even more the character of Superman. Onto The Next Game : Finished my Kingdom Hearts 2.8 game to refresh myself of some of the story. Now I'm more excited than ever for the next release. Last Day : Today marked the last day of the 'week of three good things' assignment. Having completed all seven I feel pretty accomplished. Looking back on it, it was actually a pretty okay week when everything was written and done. Winning : Played a game I haven't touched in a while, Smash Bros for the Wii U to be exact. Despite being away from the game for so long I decided to plunge head-first into the online fighting mode. To my surprise I had a pretty competitive three rounds with me winning two out of three even with me being a little rusty. Sweet Gear : Went shopping for some new shirts and came across two that were the last ones in stock. Managed to grab both even after doing some more shopping and coming back later after thinking about doing the purchase or not. Fixin' Wheels : Drove up to Wilmington today to help my brother replace a battery in an old ride he's trying to revive. Because we spent the time fooling around we ended up prolonging a short job, but it was a good time despite it taking an hour more than it should have. Even my store manager gave me some recognition. Good Drive : Decided to take the long way home and listen to the album 'YSIV' by Logic. The first track set the tone for the whole ride, it was a nice 30 minute vibe. Still Got Vocals : During the drive I sang along to the chorus of the track, 'Thank You' and was surprised I still had some range despite not practicing singing for a couple years. Day Five
Rest : Actually got a full night's sleep despite pulling an all-nighter yesterday due to insomnia. Sometimes I forget how good eight hours of sleep can feel. Just plotting : Took a minute out of my day to sit down and figure some things out in my life. It felt like five minutes well spent. Cat naps : After starting the outline of my speech for my public speaking class I took a nap. I had woken up fifteen minutes in and noticed that my cat had joined me and was sleeping at the head of my pillow. I decided to lay back down and nap along with her for another forty-five minutes. Home Free : Managed to get my car inspected and took care of business. Sitting With My People : While getting my car worked on, it was a decent excuse for me and my Dad to catch up on some things. Decent Episode : Ended the day with a pretty cool episode of Netflix's Iron Fist. Early Bird : Managed to get up with the alarm to make it to my job on time this morning despite the earlier start time for holidays. Breaking Bread : Me and a friend shared some lunch while on break at work. The conversation and grub made for a pretty chill lunch time. Work Delayed : My public speaking class rescheduled our next speech by another week. This gives me more time to prepare and definitely brought a smile to my face. Laughing about dumb stuff : Me and a friend of mine were standing at the side-entrance of my work place standing in for security. For no reason at all I stared at the camera we were supposed to be watching and mumbled, "Yeet" just to get a laugh out of him. His response was, "YEET" yelling it even louder. The moment was stupid, but just that little interaction was enough to make us laugh for 2 minutes. That Bang Energy : Late into my shift I was throwing some boxes into our store's trash compactor. A coworker came into the back and mentions that he was thirsty. "Hey this drink is still here? Its been there for a whole month now, people really that scared of it?" He points toward the can of Bang, a root beer flavored energy drink as he approaches it. "Bro nobody wants any parts of that." I replied before going back to what I was doing. My attention gets pulled to him as I hear the 'pop' ringing from the can as he was about to drink it. "Yo, you really about to drink that?" I called out to him in an unintentionally shocked and dramatic voice. "Look man I need the energy. But you sound completely thrown off about this." he remarks while trying not to laugh too hard, causing me too laugh just as hard as we was. Red Lights : Driving home from a fast food place I was coming up on a yellow light. Knowing that I was close enough to blow through it I sped up and made it just in time. In my rear view mirror I saw that someone who was right behind me, though a little far, pushed through the light too. What made the situation funny to me was that I knew they had just blown a red light to which I remarked to myself, "Yo people out here wildn' ." with a grin on my face. |
